🚨 1990 Buick Skylark: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Buick Skylark uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock override accessed near the shifter base on the column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Press the brake pedal fully
  4. Move the shift lever to Neutral
  5. If the shifter is locked due to dead battery or failed brake switch, proceed to manual override
  6. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small slot or cap on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever (typically on the lower left side of the column)
  7. If there is a cap, carefully pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver
  8. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
  9. Press or depress the override while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
  10. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override must be used. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power. Insert a tool into the override slot and apply pressure while shifting to Neutral. The ignition may not turn without power, but the shifter can still be released mechanically.
