⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or RUN position if battery has any charge
- Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift from Park to Neutral
- If the shifter remains locked (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift lock override
- The override is accessed via a small cap or slot on the console, typically located directly in front of or to the left of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key blade to pry off the cap if present
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Release the override tool once in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cap or slot on the console in front of or to the left of the shifter base—Catera/Opel Omega platform typically places override access on the forward left side of shifter housing
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock solenoid remains engaged and the ignition cannot be turned on. The mechanical shift lock override is the only method to release the shifter—no electrical method will function. Locate and use the override slot exclusively.
