🚨 2003 Cadillac DeVille: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 DeVille uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock release button—it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover directly below and to the right of the column shifter button
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to press down into the shift lock release slot while holding the brake
  6. While holding the release down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. If the key will not turn or battery is completely dead, see no-power notes below

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the steering column lock will prevent key rotation and the shift interlock cannot be electrically overridden. You must jump-start the 12V battery with a portable jump pack or another vehicle to provide enough power to turn the key to ACC and release the shift lock. Once power is available, follow the normal override procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be dollied or dragged onto a flatbed with front wheels off the ground.
