🚨 2012 Cadillac Escalade EXT: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Escalade EXT uses a traditional floor-mounted column-style automatic shifter lever on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged if possible.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position (or insert key and turn to ON).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Move the shift lever to Neutral position—it should release normally if power is present and brake is applied.
  5. If the shifter will not move out of Park despite brake application, proceed to shift lock override.
  6. Locate the shift lock override slot: on the left side of the shifter lever base, there is a small rectangular cover cap.
  7. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cover.
  8. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  9. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  10. Remove the tool and replace the cover; the vehicle is now in neutral and can be rolled.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override on the 2012 Escalade EXT is mechanical and does not require electrical power. Even with a completely dead battery, you can use the override slot (left side of shifter base) to mechanically release the shifter from Park into Neutral. Ensure the parking brake is set or wheels are chocked before attempting this.
