🚨 2018 Cadillac Escalade: Emergency Neutral
The 2018 Cadillac Escalade (GMT K2XX platform, 2015-2020 generation) uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and electronic park lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON or ACC position; the shift lock system requires some electrical power to function.
- Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift to Neutral normally first.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access: look for a small covered slot or rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base assembly, near the driver's side.
- Carefully pry off the small plastic cover using a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down or pull up (depending on mechanism design) while pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If successful, leave the vehicle in Neutral with the parking brake set for loading onto the flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access slot typically located on the left (driver's) side of the shifter console base; check the immediate left side of the shifter assembly for a removable plastic cap.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter may not respond even with the override, as the shift-by-wire system requires some 12V power. If the battery is totally dead, you may need to provide a jump start or auxiliary power to the vehicle just long enough to shift into Neutral. If this fails, the transfer case (if 4WD/AWD) must be placed in Neutral using the transfer case override, or the vehicle must be flatbedded with all four wheels off the ground or the driveshaft disconnected.
