🚨 2020 Cadillac Escalade: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 Escalade uses a traditional column-mounted electronic shifter lever with shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock release access - there is a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the column shifter
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the release slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral
  6. If successful, the transmission is now in Neutral and the vehicle can roll
  7. If the steering column is locked and you cannot turn the wheel, you may need to rock the steering wheel back and forth while attempting to turn the ignition
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access slot/cover located near the base of the column shifter assembly, typically on the right side
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the column shifter lock will remain engaged and the manual override becomes essential. The override slot allows mechanical release of the shift interlock. If the electronic parking brake is applied and battery is dead, the EPB will remain engaged - you must jump start the vehicle or connect external power to release the electronic parking brake before the vehicle can roll. Without releasing EPB, flatbed transport is required.
