🚨 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 Fleetwood uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever controlling a 4L60-E automatic transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply wheel chocks
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (does not require a running engine, just electrical power to unlock the column)
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Pull the shift lever toward you (toward the steering wheel) and move it to the Neutral position
  5. If the shifter will not move despite pressing the brake, locate the shift lock override slot
  6. The override is a small slot or button access located on the lower steering column shroud, typically on the right side near where the shift lever protrudes
  7. Remove the small plastic cover or access panel if present
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press/push while pulling the shifter
  9. Move the shifter to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Located on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side of the column; look for a small rectangular cap or access hole in the lower column cover
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead and you cannot turn the ignition key to ACC/ON, the steering column lock and shift interlock may still be engaged. The mechanical shift lock override can still be used with zero electrical power—insert the tool into the override slot and apply pressure to mechanically release the shift lock, then move the lever to Neutral. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to apply slight rotation pressure to the wheel while turning the key.
