The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply wheel chocks
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (does not require a running engine, just electrical power to unlock the column)
- Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
- Pull the shift lever toward you (toward the steering wheel) and move it to the Neutral position
- If the shifter will not move despite pressing the brake, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override is a small slot or button access located on the lower steering column shroud, typically on the right side near where the shift lever protrudes
- Remove the small plastic cover or access panel if present
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press/push while pulling the shifter
- Move the shifter to Neutral
