🚨 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a push-button shift lock release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override button on the column shifter - it is a small rectangular button or slot typically located on the right side of the shifter housing near the base where it meets the column
  4. Using a small flat-blade screwdriver or key, press and hold the shift lock override button
  5. While holding the override button, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  6. If successful, release the override button and shifter button

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the column shifter's mechanical shift lock may still be engaged. If you cannot move the shifter even with the override button: 1) Try jump-starting the vehicle or connecting a jump box to get minimal 12V power, 2) Turn the key to ACC/ON position, then use the override. The column lock mechanism requires some electrical function to fully release. If no power source is available and the override doesn't work, the vehicle may need to be dollied with rear wheels lifted.
