🚨 2001 Cadillac Seville SLS: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 Cadillac Seville SLS (fourth generation) uses a column-mounted shifter with electronic shift-lock interlock tied to the brake light switch and ignition position.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with parking brake applied
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (battery power required for normal operation)
  3. If the shifter is stuck in Park due to a failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override access
  4. Look for a small rectangular or circular cover/slot on the lower steering column shroud, near the shifter base on the driver's side
  5. Carefully pry off or open the small cover using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
  6. Insert a small screwdriver or the ignition key into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override depressed, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Release the override and remove the tool; verify the vehicle is in Neutral before releasing the parking brake
Shift-lock override location
On the lower left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter lever; covered by a small removable plastic cap approximately 0.5 inches in diameter
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the steering column lock may prevent the ignition key from turning. The shift lock override is mechanical and should still function, but you may need to restore some 12V power (via jump pack or battery charger) to release the steering lock mechanism before you can access the shifter. Alternatively, a locksmith may be able to release the steering lock manually.
