🚨 2003 Cadillac Seville SLS: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Seville uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the shifter base, near where the lever meets the console
  4. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or key
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool straight down into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and pulling the shifter toward you and down through the gate into Neutral
  7. Keep the tool depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  8. If loading onto a flatbed, you may continue moving the shifter to Neutral without removing the tool
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot is mechanical and will still function. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override mechanism works independently. The shifter will move with the tool depressed even without ignition power. Steering wheel will be locked, so vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed - do not attempt to push or tow with wheels on ground.
