The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small removable cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the console
- The override is typically a small rectangular slot on the left front side of the shifter base - remove any plastic cap covering it
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down or push forward on the override mechanism (depending on design) while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down into Neutral
- Keep the tool engaged until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
- If loading onto a flatbed, maintain pressure on the override as needed
