🚨 1999 Cadillac Seville STS: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 Seville STS uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small removable cover or slot near the base of the shifter on the console
  4. The override is typically a small rectangular slot on the left front side of the shifter base - remove any plastic cap covering it
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
  6. Press down or push forward on the override mechanism (depending on design) while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it down into Neutral
  7. Keep the tool engaged until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
  8. If loading onto a flatbed, maintain pressure on the override as needed
Shift-lock override location
Small slot near the shifter base on the console, typically on the left side, covered by a removable cap - exact location may require inspection of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override will still function to release the shift lock. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override mechanism is purely mechanical. The shifter will move with the override engaged even without any electrical power. Steering wheel will be locked, so vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed - do not attempt to push or tow with wheels on ground.
