🚨 2000 Cadillac Seville STS: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Cadillac Seville STS uses a traditional console-mounted shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with the parking brake firmly engaged and wheels chocked
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter base
  4. Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have power) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If you have no electrical power, you must use the override slot with manual force—press the override and apply firm pressure on the shifter button while pulling the shifter toward Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or pushed; keep the override tool accessible in case the shifter tries to return to Park

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override slot is mechanical and will still function. You will need to manually press the override and manipulate the shifter with force. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed—it cannot be steered. Do NOT attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
