The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with the parking brake firmly engaged and wheels chocked
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power available
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter base
- Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have power) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If you have no electrical power, you must use the override slot with manual force—press the override and apply firm pressure on the shifter button while pulling the shifter toward Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or pushed; keep the override tool accessible in case the shifter tries to return to Park
