🚨 1991 Cadillac Seville: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Cadillac Seville uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with mechanical shift-lock interlock controlled by the brake light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with parking brake applied
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (or as far as it will turn if the battery is dead)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically found on the lower steering column shroud near the shifter lever base
  4. Remove any small plastic cover or cap concealing the override slot
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly
  6. While holding the override pressed, move the column shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If the key will not turn due to steering lock, try turning the steering wheel slightly left and right while turning the key
Shift-lock override location
On the lower steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, typically on the right side; may have a small removable plastic cover
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will not be able to turn the ignition key past the LOCK position due to the steering lock mechanism. The shift lock override should still function mechanically. If you cannot turn the key at all, you may need to restore minimal 12V power (jump pack or charger) to release the steering lock, or have the steering lock mechanism manually released by a locksmith.
