⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ON/RUN position (do not start engine)
- Locate the shift lock override button/slot on the shifter console
- Remove the small rectangular trim cover to the left of the shifter base (it pries out with a small flathead screwdriver)
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the exposed shift lock override slot
- Press down on the override while depressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power: press the override and move shifter to Neutral (brake pedal may not be required)
Shift-lock override location
The shift lock override is located on the left side of the shifter base in the center console. A small rectangular trim cover (approximately 1 inch wide) must be removed to access the override slot.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, turn the key to any position (steering lock may engage if you turn to OFF). Remove the trim cover left of shifter base, insert tool into override slot, press firmly and pull shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override should work without power, though you may need more force.
