🚨 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche: Emergency Neutral
The 2007 Avalanche uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, below and to the right of the shift lever
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the ignition key to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool straight into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override tool down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shift lever to Neutral
- If the brake pedal cannot be pressed due to a locked booster, continue holding the override tool down while moving the shifter—the override mechanically releases the shift lock independent of the brake switch
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled; replace the cap after moving the vehicle

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock mechanism is spring-loaded to the locked position. You MUST use the mechanical shift lock override (the slot described above) to release the shifter. The override is purely mechanical and does not require any battery power. Turn the key to ACC if possible to unlock the steering wheel, but the shift override will work even without ignition position change.
