⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Insert the key and turn to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
- Locate the shift lock release slot on the lower side of the column shroud, typically on the right side near the shifter lever base
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot approximately 1/4 to 3/8 inch
- Press and hold the release while pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral
- If the key won't turn due to dead battery, proceed to no-power procedure below

Small slot or button on the right side of the lower steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the steering lock will prevent key rotation. Access the shift lock release mechanically: remove the lower steering column cover (usually 2-3 screws or clips), locate the white or tan plastic shift lock actuator cable/solenoid near the column, manually push or pull the release mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical linkage can be overridden without power.
