🚨 1996 Chevrolet Blazer: Emergency Neutral

This 1995-2005 generation S10 Blazer uses a column-mounted shifter with an accessible shift lock release button or slot.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Insert the key and turn to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any charge)
  3. Depress the brake pedal (if brake-light switch is functional)
  4. If shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override: look for a small covered slot or button on the right side of the column shroud near the shifter base
  5. Some models have a small removable plastic cover; pry it gently to access the override button
  6. Insert a small screwdriver or press the button while moving the shifter to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small button or slot typically found on the right side of the steering column shroud, just below or beside the shifter lever; may be behind a small snap-in cover
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the steering lock will prevent key rotation. Remove the lower steering column trim panels to access the shift interlock mechanism directly. Locate the shift lock cable/actuator (typically white or tan plastic) and manually disengage it to allow shifter movement. On some units, you can reach in from below the column without full disassembly.
