🚨 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place.
- The 12V battery must have some charge for the electronic shifter to function—if completely dead, jump-start the 12V battery (located under the rear cargo floor) or connect a battery booster pack.
- Turn the vehicle ON by pressing the power button with your foot off the brake pedal (this may require multiple presses or holding the button).
- With the vehicle powered on, press the Neutral (N) button on the shifter. The shift indicator should display 'N'.
- If the shifter remains locked due to brake-light switch failure, locate the shift lock release slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the lower left side of the shifter base console.
- Remove the cap, insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot, press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the Neutral button.
- Confirm 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster before attempting to move the vehicle.
- If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it is in Neutral and consult towing procedures—flatbed towing is strongly recommended.

With zero electrical power
The Bolt EV requires 12V power to operate the electronic shifter. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start it or connect an external 12V power source to the 12V battery (under rear cargo floor) before the shifter will respond. Without any 12V power, the shifter is electronically locked and the manual override alone will not release it—power is required.

CRITICAL EV WARNING: The Bolt EV should only be towed on a flatbed or with all wheels off the ground. Towing with drive wheels on the ground, even in Neutral, can cause severe damage to the electric drive unit and high-voltage components. Tow mode (Neutral with vehicle off) is available but flatbed is the only truly safe method. Do not push or roll the vehicle long distances even in Neutral without understanding the risks to the drive motor.
