🚨 1996 Chevrolet Caprice: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Caprice uses a column-mounted shifter with a brake-transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system that prevents shifting out of Park without brake application.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is set and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition to the RUN position if any battery power remains
  3. Locate the shift lock override - there is a small access hole or slot in the column shroud near the base of the shifter lever
  4. On most B-body Caprices, look for a small round or rectangular opening on the lower right side of the column shroud, just forward of the shifter
  5. Remove any small plastic cap covering the override access
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or trim tool into the opening
  7. Press down on the internal release mechanism while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
  8. The override mechanically disengages the shift lock pawl

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override works mechanically with no power. However, without battery power, the ignition lock cylinder may be difficult to turn. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to apply slight rotational pressure to the wheel while turning the key. The override mechanism itself does not require electrical power to function.
