🚨 2025 Chevrolet Captiva: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Captiva (Mexico market) uses a conventional PRNDL console-mounted shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rectangular opening near the shifter base, often covered by a removable cap or trim piece on the right side or front of the shifter
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or popping it out with your fingers
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the brake pedal has no effect, continue holding the override and pull the shifter directly to Neutral
  8. The vehicle can now roll freely—ensure it is secure before releasing the parking brake
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front edge under a small removable cap; exact position may vary by trim—inspect around the shifter console for a small rectangular slot or access point
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the override slot will still function mechanically. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the physical override release allows the shifter to move to Neutral regardless of electrical state. Ensure parking brake is set before attempting.
