The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rectangular opening near the shifter base, often covered by a removable cap or trim piece on the right side or front of the shifter
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or popping it out with your fingers
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the brake pedal has no effect, continue holding the override and pull the shifter directly to Neutral
- The vehicle can now roll freely—ensure it is secure before releasing the parking brake
