⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position if possible (battery charge permitting) and depress the brake pedal—this is the normal method
- If the battery is dead or brake-light switch has failed, locate the shift lock override release
- Look for a small rectangular or circular cap/cover on the console trim directly adjacent to the shifter—on C6 models this is typically forward and to the left of the shifter lever base
- Carefully pry off the cap using a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the revealed slot and push down firmly to release the shift lock mechanism
- While holding the override tool down, move the shifter from Park through the gate to Neutral
- Release the override, remove the tool, and verify the transmission is in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small cap-covered slot on the console forward and to the left of the shifter base; may require close inspection of console trim for the removable cover
With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. The ignition does not need to be in any particular position when using the override. Be aware that power steering and power brakes will not function, making the vehicle harder to maneuver once moved.
