The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Firmly depress brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the driver's side of the shifter base, behind a small removable cap
- Remove the rubber cap covering the override slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while pulling the shift lever toward you and moving to Neutral
- If successful, release the override and verify the shifter is in Neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Use the override slot method as described. You may need to manually unlock the steering column by turning the key.
