🚨 2024 Chevrolet Corvette C8 E-Ray: Emergency Neutral

The C8 E-Ray uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with buttons/lever integrated into the center console, controlling a hybrid AWD powertrain with a 1.9 kWh battery pack for the front electric motors.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is securely chocked—the E-Ray has significant weight (3,900+ lbs) and the front electric motors can create unexpected movement
  2. Apply the electronic parking brake if any 12V power is available
  3. Attempt to put the vehicle in Tow Mode first: Press the brake pedal, then press and hold the Drive Mode button on the center console for approximately 5-10 seconds until 'Transport Mode' or 'Tow Mode' appears on the display—this releases the transmission parking pawl electronically
  4. If Tow Mode is accessible, the vehicle can now roll freely in neutral
  5. If no 12V power exists, locate the shift-lock override: on the C8 center console near the shifter assembly, look for a small rubber plug or cover directly behind or to the side of the shifter mechanism (typically driver's side)
  6. Remove the cover with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver to expose the override slot
  7. Insert a small screwdriver or tool into the slot and press/hold while attempting to manipulate the shifter out of Park
  8. CRITICAL: Even with the shifter in neutral, the E-Ray's hybrid system may create resistance or unexpected behavior—flatbed towing with all wheels off the ground is MANDATORY
Shift-lock override location
Small rubber plug or cover near the shifter assembly on the center console, typically on the driver's side or directly behind the shifter mechanism—exact location may vary slightly by model year; consult owner's manual if accessible
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override provides mechanical release of the shifter mechanism, but the transmission parking pawl and hybrid system components may not fully disengage. Use the override to release the shifter, but expect significant resistance. The 12V battery in the C8 E-Ray is located in the front trunk—if jump-starting is possible, this is strongly preferred to enable Tow Mode.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
MANDATORY FLATBED TOWING ONLY: The E-Ray has electric motors on the front axle that are always mechanically connected to the front wheels. Towing with any wheels on the ground will cause the front motors to generate electricity, potentially damaging the hybrid system inverter and battery. The rear wheels are connected to the gas engine/transmission. Never tow this vehicle with wheels down under any circumstances. Even short-distance rolling (onto a flatbed) should be minimized.
