🚨 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray: Emergency Neutral

The C8 Stingray uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with a button array for Reverse-Neutral-Drive and a prominent Park button, replacing the traditional lever of the C7.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the electronic parking brake if any power is available
  2. First attempt: If the 12V system has any power, press the brake pedal firmly and press the 'N' (Neutral) button on the shifter panel—this is the normal method
  3. If the brake interlock is preventing neutral selection, activate Transport/Tow Mode: Press and hold the Drive Mode button (located on the center console) for approximately 5-10 seconds while pressing the brake pedal—the Driver Information Center should display 'Transport Mode' or similar, and the transmission will release to neutral
  4. If no 12V power exists, locate the shift-lock override: Look on the driver's side of the center console near the shifter button assembly for a small rubber plug or plastic cover (typically within 2-3 inches of the shifter buttons)
  5. Remove the small cover using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver to expose the override slot beneath
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override, the shifter should allow you to press the Neutral button, or the transmission may mechanically release from Park—you may need to gently rock the vehicle if the parking pawl is under load
Shift-lock override location
Small rubber plug or plastic cover on the driver's side of the center console, within 2-3 inches of the electronic shifter button assembly; remove to access the mechanical override slot
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override provides mechanical bypass of the electronic shift interlock. The C8's 12V battery is located in the front trunk (frunk) area—if accessible, jump-starting is the preferred method. If using the override with no power, the transmission parking pawl may be difficult to release if the vehicle is on an incline or the pawl is under load; rocking the vehicle gently while holding the override can help. The electronic shifter buttons will not light up, but the mechanical release should still function.
