⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if any battery power remains
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, beneath a small rectangular plastic cover
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cover cap
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot
- Press the tool straight down into the slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and moving the shift lever from Park through to Neutral
- If completely dead battery, keep the override tool pressed while using firm force on the shift lever to move it to Neutral

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical override will still release the shift lock mechanism. The override mechanism is purely mechanical in nature. You will need to apply steady downward pressure on the override while pulling the shifter with moderate force. The key may need to be in the ON position to release the steering lock if you need to steer the vehicle.
