🚨 1997 Chevrolet Corvette: Emergency Neutral
The 1997 C5 Corvette (first C5 year) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake pedal and ignition position.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock release button or slot—on C5 Corvettes this is typically found on the left side of the shifter housing near the base, and may be covered by a small removable plastic cover.
- Use a small flat-head screwdriver or key to press down on the shift lock release mechanism.
- While holding the release down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the ignition cannot be turned on due to dead battery, proceed to the no-power procedure below.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you must provide 12V power to unlock the shifter. Use a jump box or jumper cables connected to another vehicle to energize the electrical system enough to turn the ignition to ACC/ON position, which allows the shift lock override to function. Without any power source, you will need to remove the center console trim to access and disconnect the shift lock solenoid mechanically—this requires removing multiple trim panels and fasteners.
