⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small rectangular cap or cover on the left side of the shifter base near the front
- Use a flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the small plastic cover
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter toward Neutral - it should release and move freely
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and the vehicle can be moved

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override will still work. You do not need ignition power to use the override - simply remove the cover, insert a tool into the slot, press down firmly to manually release the shift lock mechanism, and move the shifter to Neutral. The steering column will remain locked, so the vehicle must be pushed or winched straight onto a flatbed.
