🚨 2018 Chevrolet Equinox: Emergency Neutral
The redesigned 2018 Equinox (third generation) uses an electronic precision shift console-mounted lever with push-button release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
- If battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON/RUN (push START button without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base near the front corner
- Remove the small cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or by prying gently
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the shift lock release slot
- Press the tool down firmly into the slot to mechanically release the shift lock
- While holding the override down, press the shift lever button and move the shifter to N (Neutral)
- The shifter should move to Neutral with firm pressure even without electrical power
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or steered (steering will be heavy without power assist)

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shifter's manual release still functions mechanically. You cannot turn on the ignition, but the shift lock override allows moving to Neutral. Be aware that the electronic parking brake (EPB) on some trims may remain engaged with no power - if the EPB is stuck on, the vehicle must be towed on a flatbed. Electric power steering will not function, making steering extremely heavy. Brake booster vacuum will be depleted after one or two pedal applications.
