🚨 1991 Chevrolet Lumina Z34: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Lumina Z34 coupe uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a push-button release on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake and chock wheels securely
  2. Turn ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—on this generation it should be near the base of the shifter on the console, often covered by a small rectangular cap
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver or popping it out with your finger
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
  6. While pressing down on the tool to depress the shift lock mechanism, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. Keep foot on brake during this process if vehicle has any electrical power
Shift-lock override location
Look for a small rectangular slot near the base of the console shifter, typically on the left side or front of the shifter boot area; it may be covered by a cap that matches the console trim
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you may need significant force on the override tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever. The steering wheel will be locked; do not attempt to steer. If the override slot is difficult to locate, carefully inspect the entire perimeter of the shifter base and boot area.
