🚨 1991 Chevrolet Lumina: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Chevrolet Lumina uses a column-mounted shifter with a cable-actuated shift lock tied to the brake pedal switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small removable plastic cap or slot on the lower left side of the steering column shroud, below and forward of where the shifter lever emerges
  4. Remove the plastic cap with your finger or a flat-blade screwdriver
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly
  6. While maintaining pressure on the override, press the brake pedal and pull the shifter lever toward you to release from Park
  7. Move the shifter to Neutral
  8. The vehicle can now be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot turn the ignition key, which means the steering column lock remains engaged. The shift lock override will work mechanically without power - insert the tool and press while moving the shifter. However, the locked steering wheel makes towing dangerous. Use a flatbed or tow with the front wheels lifted. Do not attempt to tow with locked steering on the ground.
