🚨 1998 Chevrolet Lumina: Emergency Neutral

The 1998 Lumina uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a button on the lever for gear selection.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and you have wheel chocks in place
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (this provides power to the shift interlock solenoid)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the button on the shifter handle and move the lever to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not move with brake pedal pressed, locate the shift lock override access
  6. Remove the plastic cover/trim piece on the lower steering column shroud near the base of the shifter
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the shift lock override slot (typically a small rectangular opening)
  8. Press the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral
  9. Once in Neutral, you can release the override and remove the tool
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot accessible after removing lower column shroud trim near the shifter base; exact location requires inspection as trim panel design varies
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the shift interlock will not release using normal methods. You must use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the lower column shroud trim to access the override slot, then use a screwdriver to manually release the lock mechanism while moving the shifter. This works without any battery power.
