🚨 2000 Chevrolet Lumina: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 Lumina sedan uses a traditional column-mounted shifter lever with a push-button release on the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake and chock wheels securely
  2. Turn ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the lower steering column near the shifter lever base—look for a small rectangular opening with a cap or plug
  4. Remove the cap (it may be labeled with a key symbol or simply be a small plastic cover)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
  6. While pressing firmly down on the tool to depress the shift lock mechanism, press the column shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. Keep foot on brake during this process if vehicle has any electrical power
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column near the base of the shifter lever; look for a small rectangular slot with a removable cap on the lower column shroud
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the column shifter may be extremely stiff but the mechanical override should still function—you may need significant force on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and pulling the lever. The steering wheel will be locked; do not attempt to steer.
