⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small cover cap
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- Keep your foot on the brake throughout; once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Turn the ignition key to ACC (if possible) to unlock the steering, then use the override procedure. If the steering remains locked and you cannot turn the key, you may need to jump the 12V battery minimally to unlock steering before moving the vehicle.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Malibu Hybrid has both an electric drive and gasoline engine. The high-voltage hybrid system should be in a safe state when the vehicle is off. For flatbed towing, GM recommends all wheels off the ground or front wheels on dollies if towing from the rear. Do NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground for extended distances as the electric motor and transaxle can be damaged. If you must move the vehicle a short distance (onto a flatbed), Neutral is safe, but avoid extended rolling.
