🚨 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock mechanism.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override button or release mechanism on the column shifter assembly—look for a small button or slot near the base of the shifter lever where it meets the steering column
  4. If there is a visible button, press and hold it while moving the shifter; if there is a slot covered by a trim piece, carefully pry off the cover
  5. Press the brake pedal (if power is available) while pressing the override button or inserting a small screwdriver into the override slot
  6. While holding the override mechanism, move the column shifter downward through the gate to Neutral position
  7. The shifter should release with firm, steady pressure; once in Neutral, the override can be released
Shift-lock override location
Located on the steering column near the base of the shifter lever assembly; may be accessed via a small button on the left side of the shifter housing or through a slot that requires removal of a small trim cover
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override mechanism on the 1995 Monte Carlo should function mechanically without electrical power. Access the override button or slot and apply pressure while moving the shifter. Note that you'll need to manually unlock the doors with the physical key to access the interior. The steering column lock may also be engaged, so ensure the key is inserted and turned to at least the ACC position to release the steering wheel.
