🚨 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Emergency Neutral
The 2000 Silverado 1500 uses a column-mounted mechanical shift lever with a shift-lock solenoid activated by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- If battery has any charge, turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position
- Locate the shift-lock override access - on the GMT800 column shifter, look for a small rectangular plastic cover on the lower right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter mechanism
- If present, remove the small cover by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press the release
- While holding the override, move the column shifter down into Neutral position
- If no override slot is accessible or with completely dead battery, you may need to access the shift cable at the transmission: locate the shift cable where it attaches to the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission
- Manually move the transmission shift lever into Neutral position (typically the second detent from the rear/Park position)
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the lower right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter base, or access the shift cable directly at the transmission on the driver's side
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the column shift-lock solenoid may remain engaged. Try the column override slot first if accessible. If that fails or is not present, the most reliable method is to manually move the shift lever at the transmission itself. Locate the shift cable connection on the driver's side of the transmission and move the lever to the Neutral position (second detent from full rear/Park). You may need to rock the vehicle to relieve parking pawl pressure.
