🚨 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Silverado EV uses a column-mounted electronic shifter with push-button controls (P, R, N, D).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheels are chocked.
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the Power button—if the 12V battery has any residual charge, this may allow shifter operation.
- If the shifter remains locked and will not respond, locate the tow mode procedure in the owner's manual—GM EVs typically require a service mode activation or 12V power restoration to release the parking pawl electronically.
- If 12V power is completely dead, you will need to jump-start or charge the 12V battery (located under the hood) to restore minimal electrical function and allow the shifter to operate.
- Once 12V power is restored, press the brake pedal, press the Power button, then press the 'N' (Neutral) button on the shifter.
- If the vehicle still cannot be shifted and must be moved, consult the emergency towing section of the owner's manual for any mechanical park release procedure, though GM EVs typically do not have a manual override accessible to the user.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter and parking pawl cannot be released. You must restore 12V power by jump-starting the auxiliary battery (under the hood) or connecting a portable jump pack to the remote jump terminals. Without 12V power, the transmission remains locked in Park and the vehicle cannot be shifted into Neutral.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Silverado EV should only be towed on a flatbed. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground, as the electric drive motors remain connected to the wheels and can generate voltage or suffer damage. Even in Neutral, flat-towing is not permitted. Always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with dollies under the drive wheels.
