🚨 2014 Chevrolet Suburban: Emergency Neutral

The 2014 Suburban uses a traditional column-mounted gear selector lever with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch circuit.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock release button - it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover located on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, just below and to the right of the shifter lever
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the small plastic cover over the release slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the release slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the release down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If moving to a flatbed, you may shift to Neutral for loading; for towing on the ground, consult the owner's manual for driveshaft considerations

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shift lock will still engage mechanically. The shift lock release override will work without power - use the manual release slot as described. You do not need power to use the override mechanism, but you will need to physically override the lock each time you want to move the shifter.
