🚨 2017 Chevrolet Suburban: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Suburban uses a center console-mounted electronic shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock release - there is a small plastic cap/cover on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the shifter)
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or your fingernail to pry up the plastic cap
  5. Insert a screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the revealed slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. The vehicle can now roll freely; keep your foot on the brake or have the vehicle secured

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. Use the manual release slot as described - no electrical power is needed to operate the mechanical override. However, without power you cannot turn on the ignition, which may make the steering wheel lock remain engaged.
