🚨 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe: Emergency Neutral

The 1996 Tahoe uses a column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock interlock that prevents shifting out of Park without the brake pedal depressed.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides some power to release the shifter)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the column shifter - it is a small rectangular opening on the right side of the shifter assembly near the base where the lever meets the column
  4. Remove the small plastic cover if present by prying gently with a flat screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
  6. Press firmly inward while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and down to move out of Park
  7. Shift to Neutral and hold while removing the tool

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the override slot method still works mechanically. The key does not need to be turned to any position. The mechanical override physically disengages the shift lock pawl, allowing the shifter to move. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly if the transmission parking pawl is under load.
