🚨 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe: Emergency Neutral
This generation uses an electronic console-mounted shifter (shift-by-wire) with an electronic shift interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- If battery power is available, turn the ignition to ON or ACC (do not need to start the engine).
- Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to shift to Neutral normally—this may work if only the brake switch has failed but battery power remains.
- If no electrical power or the above doesn't work: locate the shift lock override access—look for a small rectangular or square cap/cover on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side) or sometimes in front of the shifter console trim.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully remove the override access cover.
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle must be towed, Neutral can be engaged this way, but ensure the transfer case (if 4WD/AWD) is in the correct towing mode per the owner's manual.
Shift-lock override location
Console shifter base, typically on the left (driver's) side behind a small removable trim cap, though exact position may vary—inspect around the shifter base for a small cover.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead electrical power, the electronic shifter interlock cannot release electrically. The mechanical shift lock override must be used. Note that with zero power, you cannot turn on the ignition to unlock the steering wheel electronically—the wheel will remain locked. You may need to apply slight turning pressure to the wheel while turning the key to ACC to mechanically unlock it, or have the vehicle towed with the wheel locked (flatbed only).
