🚨 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Tahoe uses an electronic precision shift console-mounted shifter with push-button release and shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover located on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the plastic cover cap over the override slot.
  5. With your foot on the brake pedal (if brake lights function), insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the shifter will not move to Neutral, keep the override pressed and attempt to rock the vehicle slightly while shifting (may help disengage park pawl if on incline).
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of shifter base, small rectangular slot with removable plastic cover, approximately 1 inch from the shifter lever itself on the driver's side.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter will not function normally. The shift-lock override allows mechanical release of the shifter, but the transmission park pawl may remain engaged. If the override does not result in freeing the vehicle, winching onto a flatbed with rear wheels lifted or using dollies is required. Do NOT force the shifter - the electronic shift mechanism can be damaged.
