The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override—look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the shifter base, often positioned on the left side of the shifter console or just forward of the shifter boot
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pry off the small access cover
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot
- Press down firmly on the override release while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal and pulling the shifter toward Neutral
- If brake pedal is hard due to vacuum loss, maintain pressure on the override and move the shifter—the mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock
