The 2026 Trax is expected to continue with the same compact console-mounted electronic shifter with push-button Park release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- If battery has any power, turn the ignition to ON or ACC position
- Locate the shift lock override access - on the left side of the shifter base, look for a small rectangular cover near the console surface
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the exposed override slot
- Press the screwdriver down firmly into the slot to mechanically release the shift lock
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- The shifter should move freely while the override is engaged
Shift-lock override location
Expected on the left side of the shifter base, beneath a small rectangular cover on the console surface - verify as 2026 model details are not yet confirmed
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter may feel resistant but the mechanical override still functions. You do not need electrical power to release the shift lock using the override slot. Apply firm pressure while holding the override down - the mechanism is purely mechanical once the override is engaged. The shifter will move to Neutral without any electrical power.
