🚨 2001 Chevrolet Venture: Emergency Neutral
The 2001 Venture uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the ignition is on and the brake pedal is not pressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is set (if functional)
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if you have any battery power remaining
- Locate the shift lock release slot: it is a small rectangular opening located on the left side of the steering column shroud, just above and to the left of the shifter itself
- Remove the small plastic cover cap from the release slot if present
- Insert a small flat-head screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the slot approximately 1/2 inch deep
- While pressing the tool down into the slot, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, remove the tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock is mechanically engaged. The manual override slot must be used as described above. You will NOT be able to turn the ignition key without power, so skip that step and proceed directly to using the override release. The steering wheel will remain locked without power, which may make loading onto a flatbed more difficult—ensure the front wheels are pointed straight before the battery died if possible.
