🚨 2004 Chevrolet Venture: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Venture uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (this provides power to release the shift lock).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  5. If the shifter will not release from Park with the brake pressed, locate the shift lock override slot—a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover on the console to the left or right of the shifter base.
  6. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key to remove the override cover.
  7. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  8. If the battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be turned on, you must use the shift lock override method in step 5-7; the mechanical override does not require electrical power.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override must be used. The override slot allows manual release of the shifter pawl independent of electrical systems. Insert a tool into the override slot and press down firmly to release the lock, then shift to Neutral while holding the override depressed.
