⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shifter release button on the front of the shifter handle and move to Neutral
- If no electrical power is available, locate the shift lock override slot on the console to the left of the shifter base, typically covered by a small removable cap or trim piece
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake
- If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it remains in Neutral; the transmission can be flat-towed in Neutral for short distances but a flatbed is always preferred

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, use the shift lock override slot (left side of shifter base). You will not be able to turn the steering wheel without power, so the vehicle must be rolled straight or loaded onto a flatbed.
