🚨 2005 Chrysler 300: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 Chrysler 300 uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shifter with electronic shift-lock tied to the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal brake-and-shift operation).
  3. If no power or brake interlock failed: locate the shift-lock override access—look for a small rectangular cap or slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the gate.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the cap (if present).
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while pulling the shifter button and moving to Neutral.
  6. If battery is completely dead and power windows/locks don't work, you may need a jump-start or external 12V source to power the shifter interlock solenoid first, as the override may not fully disengage the gate without some electrical power.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access cap/slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the console gate; exact position may vary slightly by trim.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override may still be mechanically stiff. Attempt the override procedure, but if the shifter remains locked, apply a jump-pack or charger briefly to energize the interlock solenoid, then use the override. Alternatively, push/dolly the vehicle onto a flatbed with wheels locked.
