🚨 2004 Chrysler 300M: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Chrysler 300M uses a traditional PRNDL console-mounted shifter with electronic shift-lock tied to the brake pedal (LH platform).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal brake-and-shift operation).
  3. If no power or brake interlock failed: locate the shift-lock override—on the 300M, look for a small cover or access slot in the shifter console trim, typically to the left or front-left of the shifter lever base.
  4. Remove the cover (may be a snap-in plastic cap) using a small flathead screwdriver.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter release button and moving the lever to Neutral.
  6. If battery is completely dead, the interlock solenoid may remain engaged; attempt the override but be prepared to apply a brief jump or external 12V to release the lock.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover or slot in the console trim to the left or front-left of the shifter base; LH-platform 300M may have override integrated into the console side panel.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock may be very stiff. Attempt the mechanical override; if unsuccessful, apply a jump-pack briefly to energize the solenoid, then retry the override. As a last resort, dolly the vehicle onto a flatbed with parking brake released and wheels chocked.
