⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the release button on the side of the column shifter handle and move the shifter down to Neutral (second position from top)
- If the shifter will not move due to brake interlock or dead battery, locate the shift lock override access
- Look on the column shroud near the base of the shifter lever for a small cover or access hole—this may require removing the lower column cover by releasing clips or screws
- Once access is gained, look for a small lever, tab, or slot mechanism at the base of the shifter assembly
- Manipulate the mechanical release (push, pull, or pry depending on design) while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral
- The transmission can be towed in Neutral for short distances, but flatbed is preferred for safety
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the column shifter lever, typically accessed by removing lower column shroud or through a small access opening in the shroud
With zero electrical power
This generation uses a largely mechanical shift interlock. If the ignition lock cylinder is jammed or battery dead, you may need to access the shifter mechanism by removing the lower steering column cover. The mechanical release is at the shifter base on the column.
