🚨 1993 Chrysler Fifth Avenue: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 Fifth Avenue uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has enough charge to power the shift interlock solenoid.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  3. Move the column shifter from Park to Neutral.
  4. If the shifter will not move with the brake depressed, locate the shift lock override access on the column shroud near the shifter lever.
  5. Remove the small plastic cap or cover on the left side of the column shroud below the shifter lever (typically a small rectangular or oval cover).
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press or push the release mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

Small access cover on the left side of the steering column shroud, below and adjacent to the shifter lever; exact cover may be oval or rectangular.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shift interlock will not engage, but the mechanical lock may still hold the shifter. Use the shift lock override slot (remove the cover on the column shroud near the shifter) and manually depress the release tab with a screwdriver while moving the shifter to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked unless the key can be turned to ACC.
